I recently read an article by Mark Albertson entitled “Estate Planning for Gun Owners” which I think is mandatory reading for anyone who owns a gun.
I have had quite a few people over the last year contact me inquiring about a “gun trust” and how they could go about setting up such a trust. If you are a gun owner, you should make yourself very familiar with the National Firearms Act (NFA) and know to whom you can and cannot bequeath your guns. Mr. Albertson discusses the importance of using a gun trust to transfer ownership of weapons and he discusses the basics of how such a trust works.
He also notes the differences between a revocable trust and the gun trust. Anyone owning firearms should read this article and locate an attorney who is familiar with gun trusts and how they work.
