From Michael Rubin, your Guide to Retirement Planning
The deadline to contribute to your IRA in any given year is the due date of the tax return of that year. For 2010 filing, you have an three more days than usual!
Although 2010 is long gone in the eyes of most, not so in the world of retirement and taxes. In fact, you can make a 2010 IRA contribution, still, in 2011. The final deadline for making an IRA contribution for any given year is the due date of the tax return for that year. Since most individuals file an annual tax return, their deadline is April 15. So you’d ordinarily have until April 15, 2011 to make a 2010 IRA contribution. This year, however, you have an extra three days, since the District of Columbia is celebrating a holiday (Emancipation Day) on April 15. Since April 16 and 17 are over the weekend, the 18th became the new tax filing deadline and, as you now know, the deadline to make your 2010 IRA contribution.
The deadline is the same for both regular IRAs1 and Roth IRAs2. One last thing: just because you can wait until mid-April to make an IRA contribution doesn’t mean you should. Imagine one less fire-drill in your life and make your contribution today.
